What Accountants Want in a Job: Reddit Survey Results Reveal Top Priorities in 2025

We asked Reddit’s accounting pros to rank what really matters when choosing a new job. Their answers? Brutally honest and wildly consistent.

Thousands of accountants saw our post. Dozens responded with no filter. Here’s what they actually care about when choosing a job in 2025.

So, what do accountants want in a job?

RezzyCheck ran a survey on r/Accounting to find out. We asked what matters most when evaluating a job offer. Salary? Remote flexibility? Culture? The results were refreshingly honest and surprisingly aligned.

What Do Accountants Actually Care About?

We decided to go straight to the source: Reddit.

Using our RezzyCheck Reddit account, we posted a simple question on r/Accounting:

“How would you rank these in terms of importance to a new job?”

We listed five key factors:

  • Salary
  • Hybrid/Remote options
  • Benefits (401k, medical, etc.)
  • “Culture” (pizza parties, deadline hype)
  • Career Growth

The post took off. It was viewed by nearly 10,000 accountants and sparked a wave of real, unfiltered responses.

The Top 5 Priorities: What Accountants Want in a Job, Ranked by Reddit

1. Salary
No surprises here. Salary took the crown by a mile. Accountants made it clear: pay me what I’m worth. Some phrased it with a touch of spice:

“Salary, salary, salary.”

“The bank doesn’t take culture.”

This wasn’t about being greedy. It was about being respected and properly compensated for the value you bring.

2. Remote/Hybrid Flexibility
In today’s world, flexibility isn’t considered a perk. It’s expected. Many respondents said they’d take a pay cut to stay remote. Others described life-changing benefits of ditching the commute and working from anywhere.

“I’m in Thailand right now doing my job. I’d give up everything else to stay remote.”

3. Benefits
Benefits mattered most to those with families or health concerns. Strong healthcare and a solid 401k still hold weight, especially as inflation and insurance costs climb.

“I have Type 1 diabetes. Good insurance is non-negotiable.”

4. Career Growth
Interestingly, growth ranked lower unless you were early in your career. Many mid-level folks said they’d already climbed enough and now prioritize balance over promotion.

“I’m not trying to be a partner. I’m trying to have a life.”

5. Culture
Culture came in last. Not because it doesn’t matter, but because it’s often misunderstood. Free pizza and ping-pong tables don’t compensate for toxic leadership or burnout. That said, people still crave working with decent humans.

“Culture = not being surrounded by jerks.”

What This Means for Hiring in Accounting

If you’re hiring accountants in 2025, you need to understand what accountants want in a job and lead with it:

  • ✔️ Transparent, competitive compensation
  • 🏡 Remote or hybrid options
  • 💼 Real benefits (not just office snacks)

Career growth and team vibes are the cherry on top. But don’t lead with the cherry.
